JR East
The JR EAST PASS covers JR East lines, the Tokyo Monorail, several through-service railways in Tohoku and Niigata, and JR buses in the area, for 5 or 10 consecutive days. JR East gives an example on its page: Narita Airport to Tokyo by Narita Express, then Tokyo to Sendai and Sendai to Shin-Aomori by Shinkansen, in ordinary reserved seats, is 52,000 yen for an adult. The pass is ¥35,000 for 5 days. It cannot be used on the Tokaido Shinkansen, which is run by JR Central.
JR West
The Kansai - Hiroshima Area Pass covers reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, limited express trains such as Haruka and Kuroshio, JR West local trains in the area and the Miyajima ferry, for 5 days. Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima and back on Hikari or Sakura is ¥20,840 in tickets, against ¥17,000 for the pass, which also covers the Kansai area. The pass cannot be used on the Tokaido Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Tokyo, or on the Sanyo Shinkansen west of Hiroshima.
The JR-WEST All Area Pass is valid for 7 days on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata and the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tsuruga and Joetsu-Myoko, with limited express reserved seats and local trains in the area. It does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen or the Kyushu Shinkansen.
Choosing between a regional pass and the national pass
A regional pass fits a trip that stays in one area. The national 7-day ordinary pass is ¥50,000, against ¥26,000 for the 7-day JR-WEST All Area Pass. The regional passes do not include the Tokaido Shinkansen, so any trip between Tokyo and Kansai needs tickets or the national pass.
